Rejoice & Pray for our Catechumens & Candidates
As we prepare to enter into the Lenten season, please pray for our catechumens and candidates preparing to receive the Easter sacraments at the Easter Vigil on April 20, 2019.
The season of Lent is set aside for catechumens and candidates who are on a spiritual journey as they seek to know more deeply Christ and his Church. During the Lenten season they enter into a period of intense preparation called the "Period of Purification and Enlightenment," which begins when they participate in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion on the First Sunday of Lent at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains. Following this annual Lenten celebration, our catechumens and candidates will enter into a time of prayer and conversion as their hearts and minds are purified in preparation for the Easter Sacraments. In addition, during this period they will be enlightened by our faith, pondering the tenants of our Creed and reflecting on the meaning of the Lord's Prayer as they prepare to join us at the table of the Lord for the first time.
For us who are Catholics, Lent is a time to accompany our catechumens and candidates by our prayers and example. As we prepare to renew our own baptismal promises and once again celebrate new life in Christ at Easter, we join them in seeking conversion of heart and mind. Lent provides us the opportunity to reflect on our lives, turn away from sin, and seek to be united more closely to Christ. And so, let us pray for them and ourselves as we make this journey of conversion together.
